A well-appointed Queen Studio awaits your arrival in Makarora. This spacious, self-contained accommodation complete with ensuite, compact kitchen facility, sofa plus an outside sundeck for your own personal use, comes with uninterrupted views of the surrounding mountains. Your studio is semi-attached to a unique hexagonal home and designed to capture the alpine landscape and bring the inspiring colours and textures of the outdoors into a cosy space for you to relax and unwind. Located on the banks of the Makarora River. Your hosts Bridget and Steve and their 3 labradors Storm, Amber and Bleu assure you a warm welcome and your surroundings will simply speak for themselves!
Makarora is situated at the northern end of Lake Wanaka on State Highway 6, just an hour’s drive through Mount Aspiring National Park from Haast and 40 minutes from Wanaka. The Makarora River together with the Wilkin and Young Valleys are all in very close proximity for tramping, hunting and fishing. The valley is small but boasts huge opportunities to fulfil every outdoor passion, so ensure you give yourself the time and opportunity to explore all this rich valley has to offer!
The Rivers: November to April – Reel or Fly fishing; Heli-guided fishing – Trout and Salmon – make sure you bring your fishing rod!
Tramping: Ranging from 2 to 7 hours return Wills Valley; Mount Brewster Track; Makarora Valley Track; Cameron Valley Track; Blue Valley Track; Siberia Experience and Makarora’s signature 3-day tramp, The Gillespie Pass, between the Wilkin and Young Valleys.
Walks: There are 16 walks along the 140 km stretch of the Haast Highway linking Haast with Wanaka through the spectacular scenery of Mount Aspiring National Park. These walks range from 5 minutes to 5 hours return. All are signposted by DOC and worth the detour, even if you only have time for one or two.
Jetboating and Sightseeing: Wilkin River Jets and Back Country Helicopters offer combined Heli-Jet Combo day and overnight trips.
