Queenstown North Face – Peak to Peak 2009

The North Face Peak to Peak race will take place on Saturday 25 July commencing at midday from The Remarkables ski area, Queenstown.

The unique race literally goes from peak to peak, starting at The Remarkables and finishing at the ski area of Coronet Peak, Queenstown. The race was first held in 1994 with 15 individual and 7 teams.

The race includes 2km skiing/snowboarding course, a 17km mountain bike down The Remarkables, a 7km paddle from Frankton to Queenstown Bay, a 9km run from Queenstown to the foot of Coronet Peak and a 9km cycle ride to the base building of the ski area.

The winter race is always a highlight on the multisport calendar because it calls for a range of skills, which attracts budding and elite athletes as well as competitors who like to participate along with colleagues and friends on the highly competitive teams section.

The Peak to Peak is supporting the Bruce Grant Youth Trust as its charity this year, and is asking all competitors to make a donation to the trust set up in the name of a young Queenstown adventurer, Bruce Grant, who tragically died in 1995 after summiting K2 Mountain.

Warbirds Over Wanaka

Lake Wanaka is one of the most spectacular venues in the world for an Airshow. Nestled on the shores of an azure blue lake amongst the mighty peaks of the Southern Alps, the natural amphitheatre created by these mountains provides a backdrop of stunning scenery.

For 3 days over Easter, Lake Wanaka will become centre–stage for an extravaganza of aerial action that will delight both aviation buffs, families and those wanting a superb days entertainment. At Warbirds Over Wanaka you are so close to the continuous action you feel like you are in the poilot’s seat.

In 1988 aviation entrepreneur Tim Wallis presented an airshow and country fair that attracted 14,000 visitors to Wanaka Airport on one day. As the Airshow grew so did its support and now 80,000 + people make the pilgrimage to Wanaka for their weekend of excitement. The airshow is now a biennial centre piece of Central Otago’s tourist attractions and one of the world’s premier Warbirds Airshows.

At next years Warbirds Over Wanaka a Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk will be firing all 6 machine guns in a historic re-enactment of attacks on shipping and airfields in the Solomon Islands. The Auckland based P-40 will fire its 0.50 calibre guns at over 240mph (386km/h). In that time the aircraft will have travelled over 700 feet and the guns fired more than 60 rounds.

Make plans now and don’t miss out!
